My journey into the world of western psychology began at the age of 16years. I was fascinated by the science of human behaviour and its potential application for myself and others.
By the end of my postgraduate qualification, I was left feeling somewhat disoriented. Something about my Nigerian heritage and faith-based perspective did not align fully, with this new worldview.
It’s been almost 2 decades of learning and working in the world of western psychology; providing people with insight and skills to improve their lives. I fully appreciate the valuable result of increasing hope which I’ve observed many times in my work. However, the internal dissonance / contradictions led to an overwhelming sense of tension.
Do I fully believe this for myself? Is there an obvious limitation in this worldview?
After taking some time away to invest in my own Wellness, I found oasis in Black Psychologist, Dr Erica McInnis’, words: “choosing from the best of all cultures, including my own”. Yes, the study of human behaviour requires the perspectives of all people groups and their context.
So, I created a safe space to explore this further. Through years of sitting with family & friends, shared stories from diverse heritage, deep dive into theology and the wisdom of spirituality, I was reborn.
Now, I invite you into a similar journey, what will your wellness story be?
Be well,
Ayoola
